Women in STEMM Australia

Women in STEMM Australia works to give back to the STEM community in Australia by identifying challenges and opportunities unique to women and girls across all sectors, together enabling growth and empowerment.

Women in STEMM Australia actively connects girls and women in STEM through regular networking activities.

One member of Women in STEMM Australia has shared her experience.

'I currently work as a Senior Research Advisor in Brisbane, and previously I worked in the Office of the Queensland Chief Scientist and as an advisor to the Queensland Minister for Science.

'I have a technical background in ecology and predominantly work in the research, communication and engagement space, spreading my passion for science.

'I became a member of Women in STEMM Australia in 2018 for the experience and networks I would build, as well as the opportunity to help increase the awareness of the fantastic women working in STEM.

'As a member, I get to connect with a diverse range of like-minded people as well as being profiled alongside numerous amazing women on the Women in STEMM website.

'I was recently invited to be on the Board of Women in STEMM Australia in the capacity of Guest of the Chair, which has been a positive outcome of my membership.

'The objective of this unique initiative is to nurture future leaders in the women in STEM sector and I was honoured to be invited.

'I have been involved in learning the processes of the Board, and have been able to share my industry experience with the Board and its members.

With the Guest of the Chair opportunity Women in STEMM Australia has provided, I am hopeful I will be well placed to apply for Board positions that arise in the future.

'My advice to other women in the industry—who are considering becoming a member of Women in STEMM Australia—would be "Network, network, network!"

'Don’t underestimate the value in talking to people and sharing and receiving insights, connections and advice.'
